40 Unique Date Night Ideas

Whether you’re new to the dating game or been married for years, it’s never a bad idea to incorporate some new ideas. Keep your love life interesting and exciting by doing anything but ordinary. Sometimes, keeping the spark alive takes a little bit of creativity and I really love creativity. Routine dinners and Netflix nights are nice, but why not mix things up a little every now and again?

I challenge you to do something spontaneous and extraordinary with your significant other once a month. I am all about spontaneity. Don’t get me wrong, planning is somewhat important, the spontaneity can be from letting things flow from the initial plan. Just the anticipation of what to do next is enough to add a little fire. I have put together a list of some fun ideas to keep your relationship fresh and add some stellar memories along the way. The ideas laid out here don’t have to cost a lot, again with some creativity.

If you’re single, that’s fine too! Take yourself out on a date or invite a friend.

  1. Visit a restaurant neither of you have been to before. Order a meal for each other. See how well you know each other.
  1. Spend the entire day at a state or county fair. Use your day to see free concerts or contests. Try some new food while you’re at it.
  1. Participate in a benefit walk. There are typically a lot of benefit walks that are free of charge, look into your local schedules and see what resonates with you.
  1. Do a wine and canvas date. You don’t have to go out for this if you don’t want to or if the expenses are an issue. You can buy cheap canvas and paint at a local craft store. Search Youtube for some canvas painting ideas. Add some extra by listening to a playlist that fits the theme of the painting.
  1. A pickup truck fits an air mattress perfectly in the bed. Pack up some pillows and blankets, find a country road away from city lights and watch the stars. Take it a step further and research meteor showers and plan accordingly.
  1.  Walmart scavenger hunt. Each of you make a list of 20 items that are sold at Walmart, give to the other and see who can complete the list first. Loser has to put all the items back where they belong.
  1. Look up hiking trails at surrounding parks, pack a small backpack and spend the day in nature.
  1. Tour open houses. It doesn’t matter if you’re in the market to buy or not.
  1. If you live in the midwest tornado alley, take a storm chaser class and then chase a storm. In the spring there are often classes offered free or cheap. Always make sure you’re following proper safety precautions if you’re into this. I do not recommend going out storm chasing without first attending a class.
  1. Travel to see the northern lights. These are kind of hard to plan for but there are times where these can be somewhat predicted. Search for the best times to see the northern lights where you are closest to visiting. There is nothing like watching these electric storms.
  1. Build a Lego set together. Make a trip to the store and pick something out together and spend the afternoon building.
  1. Rent a kayak for a day, or a paddle boat, or canoe, something to get you out on the water just the two of you.
  1. Go for a drive with no GPS on where to go. Don’t set out with a destination, just go where the road calls you. Visit the fun places along the way. Try taking the highways and not interstates, you will see much more.
  1. Visit somewhere haunted or go on a ghost tour.
  1. Visit a free art museum.
  1. Have a Master Chef date. Compete with each other to make the best meal. Shake things up by using only things that are currently in the house. Or you can find a new recipe and spend your time making a meal together.
  1. Spend the whole day doing volunteer work. This may not be the most popular date idea but it’s so rewarding. Ask the local animal shelter if you can walk the dogs, call up the homeless shelter and ask if you can help prepare meals or serve.
  1. Take a trip on Amtrak. Take advantage of not having to drive anywhere and soak in all the beautiful scenery you can from the train ride.
  1. Get some cheap Dollar Tree wine glasses, and a couple bottles of enamel glass paint. The paint can be found at a craft store or WalMart for pretty cheap. Find a fun playlist and spend the evening creating your own personalized wine glasses. Don’t forget the wine when they’re dry.
  1. Go berry picking or visit an apple orchard in the spring. Take a trip to a pumpkin patch in the fall.
  1. Visit a zoo or national park. Pack a lunch to make this date a little more cost effective.

  1. Do a double date and invite some friends over for a game night. Play card games, video games or board games.
