Celebrating New Year’s Eve 2025
New Year’s Eve is by far one of my top favorite holidays. I have to admit that it is getting harder and harder each year to stay awake to actually ring in the new year each year. I do love the traditions we have as a family though. Our traditions have grown and changed a bit since my boys were toddlers but it’s always something they look forward to. I feel it really is a magical time when families can gather to celebrate the past year’s memories and look forward to the adventures that lie ahead. While the ball drop in Times Square might be the classic go-to for many, you can create your own special traditions to make the night memorable. Here are some family-friendly New Year’s Eve traditions that you can start in 2025 to usher in a fresh year with love, laughter, and togetherness.
1. Create a Year-in-Review Time Capsule
One wonderful way to reflect on the year gone by is to create a time capsule. Grab a shoebox or a decorative container and fill it with things like family pictures, ticket stubs from outings, small souvenirs, or written notes of favorite memories or accomplishments from the year. Seal the capsule and mark the date. Set a goal to open them in the future. One year from now, maybe 5, however long you want to wait. This was fun to do when my boys were little to see how their handwriting and artwork have changed.
2. Host a Family Awards Ceremony
Celebrate each family member’s unique qualities by hosting a fun awards ceremony. The big one right now is “Most likely to”. Most likely to share the most pictures, fall asleep first, not follow through on resolutions, etc. Make some small prizes or handmade certificates to present during the ceremony. This tradition not only boosts confidence but also strengthens family bonds. Don’t break the bank buying prizes, it can be as simple as taping a print out or candy bar to a ribbon to wear around their neck.
3. Cook a Special New Year’s Meal
Food has always had a way of bringing people together, and a New Year’s feast can be a fun way to celebrate. There are some really neat wives tales from different places. Try Incorporating some symbolic foods from around the world:
- Grapes (Spain): Eat 12 grapes at midnight for good luck.
- Lentils (Italy): Representing prosperity.
- Noodles (China): Long noodles symbolize longevity.
Get the whole family involved in the cooking process to make it even more special.
4. New Year’s Resolution
Tried and true, new year’s resolutions are a great way to start a new year, new you. Maybe, instead of or in addition to your own individual resolution, create a family resolution jar. Each member writes down goals for the year ahead and places them in the jar. These could range from taking more family trips to being kinder to one another. Revisit these resolutions throughout the year to see how you’re progressing as a family.
5. Movie Marathon
A movie marathon is a cozy and entertaining way to spend the evening. Choose a mix of classics, animated favorites, and feel-good movies that everyone can enjoy. Don’t forget the popcorn and blankets for added comfort!
6. Play New Year’s Eve Games
Games can add a spark of excitement to your evening. Our family tradition always includes minute to win it games. There are a ton of ideas all over Pinterest to spark some creativity to incorporate into your own family. Other ideas could be trivia. Try to come up with questions from the past year, have some questions specific to your family as well. Charades are a fun idea, use events or movies from the past year as prompts. Another idea could be pictionary. Focus on “New Year” themes.
7. DIY Balloon Drop
Recreate the magic of a big balloon drop in your living room! Fill balloons with confetti or small treats, tape a large plastic tablecloth to the ceiling, and release it at midnight. Kids will love the excitement, and it’s a great photo-worthy moment.
8. Countdown with Time Zones
For families with younger children who might not make it to midnight, celebrate earlier by following the New Year’s countdowns in other time zones. For example, watch the London countdown at 7 PM EST, or Brazil at 10 PM EST. Another idea I’ve seen for small children is to do a “Happy Noon-Year” and do all festivities at 12:00 noon. This allows everyone to experience the excitement of midnight without staying up too late.
9. Write Letters to Your Future Selves
Take some time to write letters to your future selves, reflecting on your current hopes, dreams, and challenges. Seal these letters and open them on the next New Year’s Eve. This can be a great way to track personal growth and see how much can change in a year.

New Year’s Eve 2025 is the perfect opportunity to establish meaningful and fun traditions that your family can look forward to each year. Whether you’re crafting, cooking, or playing games, the most important part is spending quality time together. Here’s to the happiest New Year’s celebration and a wonderful year ahead!
Always,
Kerri
